Update on Conversion to PPS for VA ODs
We are thrilled to share exciting news marking a long-awaited victory for federal service optometry!
After years of persistent advocacy by AFOS and the AOA and with strong bipartisan support from Congress, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has officially moved forward with implementing the Physician, Dentist, and Podiatrist Pay Schedule for VA doctors of optometry, as authorized in the Elizabeth Dole 21st Century Veterans Healthcare and Benefits Improvement Act, signed into law on January 2, 2025.
According to the Federal Register notice published October 24, 2025, optometrists are now formally included in the VA’s new annual pay ranges, with implementation effective December 28, 2025.
This action reflects the VA’s recognition of the critical role doctors of optometry play in providing essential eye and vision care to our Nation’s Veterans, as well as the need to recruit and retain highly qualified optometrists within the VA system.
This major milestone is the direct result of collective advocacy and engagement by dedicated AFOS and AOA volunteers and leaders. Congressional attention, which was spurred by AFOS and AOA leadership’s in-person meetings last month in Washington, D.C., helped push this long-delayed process forward.
While there is still work ahead to ensure smooth and equitable implementation across all facilities, this represents significant progress in the right direction and a major step toward fair recognition of the value and expertise federal service optometrists bring to the VA.
AFOS will continue to keep members informed as additional details are released regarding pay tables and implementation timelines.
Thank you for your continued dedication, advocacy, and service to our Veterans and our Nation.
Huge THANKS to so many people that have worked hard on this Bill and fighting for it's implementation.
Great work to our AFOS and AOA team in DC last month!
AFOS and AOA were honored to meet with Congressman Jack Bergman, whose dedication to supporting Veterans—both as a Veteran and as a legislator—continues to make a difference for VA Optometry and those we serve.
