Carla Engelke, OD, FAAO (VA)

Immediate Past President

Dr. Engelke is a graduate of the Southern College of Optometry and completed her residency in Primary Care/Low Vision Rehabilitation at the Southern Arizona VA Healthcare System (SAVAHCS). After which, she joined SAVAHCS as an attending staff Optometrist where she founded and continues to administer the Traumatic Brain Injury Visual Rehabilitation Service.

She has been on faculty at the Southern California College of Optometry since 2007 and was promoted to the rank of Assistant Professor in 2009. She has been Board Certified in Medical Optometry by the American Board of Certification in Medical Optometry since 2012.

Previously served as the Armed Forces Optometric Society  (AFOS) Awards Committee Chair and an Executive Council member, Dr. Engelke held the position of AFOS President in 2018. She became a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry in 2006 and is active in  the Academy’s Primary Care Section, serving as Chair of the Ocular Photography Contest. She was elected President of the Arizona Chapter of the American Academy of Optometry.

Dr. Engelke participates in optometric education as a reviewer for the Council on Optometric Practitioner Education and a consultant to the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education. In addition, she serves as a reviewer for the Optometry and Vision Science Journal. She is also active in research, serving as an inaugural member of the SAVAHCS Institutional Review Board and the chair of the SAVAHCS Research and Development Committee. Currently she is a sub-investigator in a research study related to retinal vascular tortuosity in diabetic patients.
