Discovered in 2005, Spaceflight Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome (SANS) affects long-duration astronauts, causing optic disc edema, retinal nerve thickening, globe flattening, hyperopic shifts, and chorioretinal folds. Its pathogenesis is unclear, with potential brain changes under investigation.

Dr. Tyson Brunstetter retired from the U.S. Navy in 2020, after serving nearly 25 years on active-duty as an aerospace optometrist and vision researcher, working within such areas as laser eye protection; helmet-mounted cueing systems for tactical aircraft; advanced refractive surgery; and deployable battlefield medical devices. He now serves at Johnson Space Center as NASA’s “Eyes/Vision” Clinical Lead in the efforts to mitigate a condition affecting the eyes, brain, and vision of astronauts during long-duration spaceflight, Spaceflight Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome (SANS).
He’s been a proud member of AFOS for 28 years, and received the AFOS Junior Optometrist of the Year Award in 2004, and the AFOS Orion Award in 2023.
